Coptic boy’s Ramadan gesture ends in detention

At sundown each day during Ramadan, which ended on 17 July with the Eid-al-Fitr celebrations, observant Muslims customarily broke their fast at their evening iftar meal by eating dates.

A week prior, on the evening of 10 July, 16-year-old Fawzi Osama was on the street in the northern Egyptian city of Alexandria, handing out dates to those hurrying home before sundown. In a country that is 90 per cent Muslim, nearly every passer-by was, almost by definition, Muslim.




Osama, however, is a Coptic Christian, and in each small plastic bag of dates he also had included a slip of paper containing a Christian message.




Before the night was over, an offended bystander had stopped Osama and taken him to a nearby police station. The irate Muslim demanded the minor be charged with offending Islam and attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity, according to the Arabic-language news website Al Bawaba.




Madr Masr, a two-year-old independent news website in Cairo, reported that the printed material inside each bag included this message: “The Lord knows all that occurs, for He is the mighty Knower. He can carry on his shoulders all that is oppressive and exhausting and bring comfort and joy, for He loves you very much.”




Madr Masr published what it said was a photo of one of the bags containing the message. The photo, according to Madr Masr, had separately first been posted on Facebook by someone else. The slip of paper included a link to a Christian website with evangelistic content.




Two of Osama’s Christian friends who learned of his predicament hurried to the police station that same evening, only to also be detained.




“Upon arriving to check on my friend Fawzi, the police at the police station took hold of my ID and mobile, and we were likewise detained,” Stephen Botros Fayed, 21, later wrote on his Facebook page. “‘You’re with the dates guy,’ they said, before remanding us two as well in custody.”




The next morning, the prosecution began an investigation into the claims against Osama, Fayed and his other friend, Shady Saeed, 20.




Al-Bawaba reported that the three were referred to prosecutors on suspicion of “defamation of religions and being in pursuit of a modern recourse to evangelism aimed at drawing in Muslims.” The Egyptian penal code calls for up to five years in prison for anyone convicted of an act of religious contempt.




Coptic lawyer Joseph Malak, who was present during the investigation, told World Watch Monitor that once the prosecution officials learned the two friends had not been with Osama, “Stephen and Shady were excluded from the case.”




However, each of the three young Copts were released on 12 July on a bail of 10,000 Egyptian pounds (about $1275), pending further investigation.




Under Egyptian law, Islam is the country’s official religion, and open proselytising for any other religion can court trouble for “inciting sectarian strife.”




“There is nothing called ‘proselytising’ in the Egyptian penal code,” Malak said. “Fawzi is underage, and he didn’t intend to incite sectarian strife. His situation is good in the case. I expect that he will be acquitted if there is a Court of Misdemeanors hearing for it. Maybe it will be dropped.”




On his Facebook page, Fayed wrote that he and Saeed were not involved with distributing dates or Christian literature with Osama.




“If someone had been caught with hashish or was drinking alcohol on the street, it would have been easier for them than everything we’ve gone through,” Madr Masr quoted him as writing.




Over the past couple of years, young Christians (mainly in Alexandria) have distributed dates during Ramadan.




A representative of the Evangelical Coptic Church, Pastor Refaat Fikri, commented about the incident on the popular Dotmsr news website on 18 July. He was quoted by Mideast Christian News as saying: “What these Christian young people do when they hand out dates to fasting Muslims on the streets is a positive thing, and should continue. This is in itself enough to express the love called for by Jesus Christ in his teachings.




“In order to make facts clear, we must affirm that evangelisation does not mean blasphemy, but it is only preaching the teachings of Christ. Blasphemy means to insult and mock other religions, which is not taught by Christ. Every true Christian does not accept to disdain other religions.”?

In the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris, the churches in the predominantly-Muslim West African nation of Niger experienced the worst attacks in their history. On the weekend of 16-17 January, hundreds of angry Islamists attacked and ransacked dozens of properties and churches, shouting “Allahu Akbar” (“Allah is the greatest”). Ten people lost their lives during that weekend; more than 70 churches were destroyed, as well as numerous Christian schools and organisations, including an orphanage. At least 30 Christian homes were also looted and burnt down.

Six months on, the reconstruction work is moving slowly and proving very expensive. Most damaged churches and properties are still not rebuilt, and the financial support promised by the state is not forthcoming.

In the heart of the capital, Niamey, the Baptist “Roundabout” church (founded in 1929) has long symbolised the presence of Protestant Christians in Niger.

Over the years, it has hosted generations of all geographic and social origins: students, diplomats and businessmen – both expatriates and Nigeriens.

Now its collapsed roof, along with its façade and walls blackened by flames, present a scene of desolation. Puddles on the floor highlight the urgency of repair, particularly as the rainy season begins.

On 17 January, this church was among the first targeted by demonstrators. The motive was said to be anger at the presence of Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou and five other African heads of state in Paris on 11 January, in what was perceived to be support for an anti-religious magazine. The “memorial” issue of Charlie Hebdo, showing the Prophet Mohammad weeping, reinforced this anger and triggered the protests, which quickly turned into anti-Christian violence.

The protests, which began in Zinder, Niger's second city, on January 16 quickly spread to other parts of the country, including Niamey, the following day.

“Since these incidents, it is as if life had stopped,” said Rev. Jacques Kagnindé, leader of the “Roundabout” church. “The church has become a source of curiosity for passers-by and a hide-out for idlers. Unfortunately our current church finances don’t allow us to begin the reconstruction.”

His church is still waiting for the financial support promised by the government, so Sunday services and other weekly meetings are held in a tent in the church courtyard.

There is a sense of abandonment among victims of such violence.

“We feel that, as the emotion of the first days has now passed, our case is no longer of interest to our political leaders,” exclaimed pastor Kagnindé.

“They seem more concerned with preparations for the elections [due in 2016] and the fight against Boko Haram. The churches are abandoned to their fate.”

At Salama church, in the capital’s northern district of Bani Fandou 2, the situation is similar. On January 17, a horde of angry protesters ransacked the church, looting and setting on fire several houses, including the pastor’s. A sewing workshop was turned into pieces and its contents, notably 15 sewing machines, were stolen.

Everything is still in need of reconstruction, the pastor, Rev. Zakaria Jadi, told World Watch Monitor.

“It is a blow to our church. For nearly a month, there was neither water nor electricity. We have done our best to allow our worship activities to restart, but we have now reached our limit. The reconstruction work may probably take some time.”

The violence also revealed the inability of the security forces to ensure the protection of Christians and their properties. In Niamey, looters roamed across the city on motorbikes, in cars or taxis, without facing any resistance from security forces.

Various sources told World Watch Monitor that there were no forces around the capital’s main churches – except the Catholic Cathedral, where a heavy police presence meant it was one of the few to escape attack.

In Zinder, some pointed to a lack of action by local security forces, after messages calling for a demonstration after Friday prayers circulated widely (principally via phone texts) on Thursday, Jan 15.

In both Niamey and Zinder, the violence appears to have been well planned and executed.

“How can one make sense of the fact that, in under two hours, more than 40 churches were destroyed across the capital?” asked a spokesman for Caritas, the Catholic aid agency, on French radio. The absence of firefighters shocked many; fire and smoke were seen in some churches days after the incidents.

The temporary chapel of the Evangelical Church of the Niger Republic was inaugurated on 12 July.

Lack of support

Apart from the material needs, estimated at hundreds of thousands of US dollars, the victims of the violence are in great need of psychological support. According to a survey by the US NGO, Samaritan’s Purse, based on a sample of 40 respondents, 32 people are suffering from severe trauma, and eight moderate trauma.

For Rev. Jadi, who lost both his house and his church, it was not easy to overcome the pain. On the day of the attack, he just had time to get his family into a safe place.

“When I returned to assess the scale of the damage, I started to step across our remaining personal belongings along the way, such as books, kitchen utensils and clothes.

“I felt very bad, such an indescribable feeling when I saw my ripped-up Bible on the ground. For a pastor, it was like my entire life was torn apart. I could not stop shedding tears.”

But now, Jadi has forgiven and wants to move forward.

“It was truly hurting, but I was well supported by brothers and sisters who have encouraged me a lot. And I received my greatest encouragement from God, he has really strengthened me in order to overcome that ordeal. And he also allowed me to support those who were in tears.

“This painful experience shows also how it is not good for a man to place all his hope in the things of this world. If my life consisted of material belongings, maybe I would not be here today?”

For Ruth, his wife, the healing process has been slower, he said.

“Almost every time we enter the church compound and she sees what used to be our home, it reminds her of the painful memories. She almost always ends up shedding tears. But by the grace of God, since last Sunday (12 July), she felt relieved and was able to share her testimony at church.”

Rev. Samaila Labo, pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Niger Republic in the northern Niamey district of Boukoki 2, also lost his house and his church.

The church had hoped to get a new roof, Rev. Labo told World Watch Monitor, but such was the extent of the damage, the whole church needed to be completely rebuilt.

Reconstruction will be long and expensive, he said. “This is why the church decided to build a temporary chapel with solid materials that resist rain and weather.”

The provisional chapel was inaugurated on Sunday, 12 July, to his great satisfaction.

“It's a great relief for me to see our members protected from rain and wind. This has also challenged us, that we will not stop our efforts until we rebuild our damaged church.”

Following this statement of intent, on the 29th of September, up to 50 rebel groups operating primarily in the area of Damascus merged to form Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam). The Damascus merger also included a wide-ranging demographic of militant groups, from the supposed "moderate", to overt Salafist hardliners. Jaish al-Islam is dominated by Liwa al-Islam, a large rebel group formerly of "FSA" branding, and led by Saudi-backed Zahran Alloush. Liwa al-Islam were also a signatory to the aforementioned statement of denunciation toward the western-backed political opposition.




These announcements have effectively put-to-bed the western propagated myth that was the "Free Syrian Army". Militant groups the west ostensibly touted as "secular moderates" yearning for "freedom and democracy" from a tyrannical regime; have now openly declared their Salafi/Jihadi fundamentalist ideology, with the ultimate aim of creating a Syrian state ruled by Islamic law.




Already, these announcements are being portrayed as an attempt by Saudi Arabia - yes, ever tolerant and inclusive Wahhabi-preaching Saudi Arabia - and other leading Salafi factions supporting the insurgency to steer "vetted, or moderate Salafi" rebels away from the Al Qaeda aligned groups; particularly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), who are now portrayed as simply "foreign jihadists" and have become the leading fall-guy in Western and Gulf media for every atrocity committed by the rebels. This false perception has been built as a result of a Western and Gulf initiated public relations campaign to "moderate" the image of the Salafi/Jihadi fundamentalists (as well as those more inclined to basic criminality, killing, and destruction) who may be more willing to meet the requirements of their Gulf donors and the United States. Yet, contrary to this divisive narrative, the same "moderate" Salafi's who are now supposedly being encouraged to disassociate from their Al Qaeda affiliates have happily fought alongside - more often than not as a junior partner - the West's supposed "number one enemy" (AQ) since the insurgency began in 2011.




In further contrast to the aforementioned "Awakening" narrative, Jabhat al-Nusra (JaN) - the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda ideologues - are still very much in the mix. Although various pundits and analysts have made efforts to publicise tensions between ISIS and JaN, the two groups still share a similar Jihadist ideology and cooperate in key areas, particularly on paramilitary operations; as do the hardline Salafi groups such as Ahrar Al-Sham, who in turn fully cooperate with the western friendly "moderates" forming the backbone of Jaish al-Islam. In the recent ISIS takeover of the "FSA" held town of Azaz from the western-friendly Northern Storm brigade (of John McCain fame), Liwa al-Tahwid quickly offered to broker a ceasefire and acted as interlocutor between the two warring factions. ISIS in turn, rejected any "FSA" authority and have since taken control of the town - not that Liwa al-Tahwid could have stopped them anyway.




These events directly contradict the notion that the new "Army of Islam" is in any rush to disassociate, let alone be able to wage war upon the ISIS or its extremist affiliates. Moreover, the leader of Jaish al-Islam, Zahran Alloush, publicly disowned his own "captain" after he warned ISIS there would be open conflict if they "continued this chaos". The leader claimed that the comments were "dangerous" and designed to "cause strife between muslims".




Furthermore, in a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Alloush, free of his "moderate" chains, lets loose on his ideals for a future Syria, in which he aspires to resurrect the Umayyad Empire (2nd Islamic Caliphate with Syria at its core and Damascus as its capital), and "cleanse" Damascus of "Majous" (pejorative Arabic term for Iranians) "Rafideh" (Shi'ites) and "Nusayris" (Alawites).




Rebel leaders openly espousing sectarian rhetoric has been a running theme throughout the conflict; in line with this trend, Alloush's statement can be taken as a clear indication that his new "Jaish al-Islam" is not in the least bit concerned with abiding by a western-friendly moderate image. Alloush, like the majority of rebel leaders, is a fundamentalist Salafist, who looks on at the minorities of Syria as kafir (unbelievers) who must submit to his interpretation of Salafi Islam or be killed.




The western/Gulf media narrative surrounding this new "Islamist Alliance" is a re-hash of failed PR campaigns of the past, which attempted to mitigate the inherent fundamentalist ideologies of the insurgents waging war upon the Syrian state. In stark contrast to the Caliphate-inspired visions held by the majority of rebel leaders, Syria has been a pluralistic secular society for decades, the majority of its Sunni muslim population are conservative and have coexisted peacefully alongside the many other religions and ethnic minorities that make up Syria's diverse society, history, and culture. The people of Syria do not aspire to a Saudi sponsored Salafi/Wahhabi leadership or doctrine of law. Contrary to the popular narrative emerging in western and Gulf media that this new force will represent an indigenous "moderate Islamist" coalition capable of taking on the foreign elements and Al Qaeda, the majority of Syrians will be repelled by the sectarian language and ideologies of Zohran Alloush; his groups overt affiliations and pandering to Al Qaeda ideologues; and his "Army of Islam".




Considering the above context, the narrative of home-grown Salafis somehow being more amenable to the Syrian population than their ISIS/JaN fundamentalist colleagues becomes even less tenable. Alloush's formation of Jaish al-Islam, alongside the "Islamist Alliance" denunciation of the western-backed political opposition, show a marked shift of the insurgency further toward the Al Qaeda ideologues fighting the Syrian regime, not further away from them.

La cifra è folle, se si considera che allo stesso prezzo il governo potrebbe comprare 4,75 milioni di tonnellate di riso e che circa metà della popolazione vive con meno di 1 dollaro al giorno. Una fonte, “Inviteranno circa 10mila persone, spesate di tutto”. E Pyongyang vuole anche spedire un razzo nello spazio.




Seoul (AsiaNews) - La Corea del Nord spenderà per il centenario della nascita di Kim Il-sung circa 2 miliardi di dollari, pari a un terzo del suo bilancio annuale. Con questa cifra potrebbe comprare al prezzo corrente circa 4,75 milioni di tonnellate di riso. Nonostante abbia una popolazione sull'orlo perenne della carestia e abbia chiesto al mondo di inviare aiuti umanitari, Pyongyang non ha intenzione di risparmiare per celebrare il compleanno del "presidente eterno" del Paese.




I dati sono stati resi noti dal governo della Corea del Sud, che controlla da dietro il confine lo scomodo vicino. Quello che è certo è che il regime comunista ha invitato i rappresentanti di 48 nazioni alle festività previste per il centenario, che cade il 15 aprile. Il funzionario di un ex Stato sovietico racconta, "La Corea del Nord ha invitato circa 100 rappresentanti del mio Paese e ci ha offerto viaggio e alloggio, è la prima volta che capita".




Inoltre, sempre secondo la stessa fonte, "centinaia fra ballerini e altri artisti sono stati assunti dal governo, secondo me, alla fine gli ospiti spesati di tutto non saranno meno di 10mila". Secondo l'agenzia di stampa del regime, al popolo "saranno dati 100 doni da parte del governo", per il Nuovo anno, il nuovo dittatore Kim Jong-un ha regalato ai bambini un pezzo di corda per saltare.




Ogni 5 o 10 anni, a seconda dell'importanza del numero, Pyongyang ricorda la nascita del fondatore spendendo fra i 300 e gli 800 milioni di dollari. La spesa complessiva di quest'anno si ottiene se si accumula, oltre agli inviti, anche la costruzione e il lancio del razzo con cui il Paese spera di entrare nel club degli astronomi mondiali.




La Corea del Nord è uno dei Paesi più poveri al mondo. Non è possibile fornire dati certi perché il governo non li rivela, ma fonti del Sud sostengono che circa la metà dei 22 milioni di abitanti vive sotto la soglia della povertà, ovvero con meno di 1 dollaro al giorno. La maggior parte degli introiti statali proviene dalla vendita di antracite e altre risorse naturali alla Cina, che l'anno scorso ha speso per questa voce 1,15 miliardi di dollari.

The Army of Islam, Saudi Arabia’s Greatest Export

An expert on international politics and blogger analyzes the new steps of the Syrian opposition increasingly divided in itself, and becoming more and more fundamentalist. The West tries to give a more "moderate" image of it. But its project is similar to that of al Qaeda.




San Diego (AsiaNews/Ich) - Recent developments regarding "rebel" groups inside Syria have shed further light on the ideologies and political aims of the militants waging war upon the Syrian state.




On the 24th September, under the moniker of the "Islamist Alliance", 11 of the largest and most recognisable rebel brigades - a mix of supposed "moderate Islamists" such as Liwa al-Tawhid, the largest "FSA"-branded brigade in Aleppo, alongside more hardline Salafi/Jihadi brigades such as Ahrar al-Sham, and Al Qaeda ideologues Jahbat al-Nusra - released a joint statement denouncing the western-backed expatriates of the "National Coalition" (NC), along with its equally impotent military arm, the "Supreme Military Council" (SMC). Following this statement of intent, on the 29th of September, up to 50 rebel groups operating primarily in the area of Damascus merged to form Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam). The Damascus merger also included a wide-ranging demographic of militant groups, from the supposed "moderate", to overt Salafist hardliners. Jaish al-Islam is dominated by Liwa al-Islam, a large rebel group formerly of "FSA" branding, and led by Saudi-backed Zahran Alloush. Liwa al-Islam were also a signatory to the aforementioned statement of denunciation toward the western-backed political opposition.




These announcements have effectively put-to-bed the western propagated myth that was the "Free Syrian Army". Militant groups the west ostensibly touted as "secular moderates" yearning for "freedom and democracy" from a tyrannical regime; have now openly declared their Salafi/Jihadi fundamentalist ideology, with the ultimate aim of creating a Syrian state ruled by Islamic law.




Already, these announcements are being portrayed as an attempt by Saudi Arabia - yes, ever tolerant and inclusive Wahhabi-preaching Saudi Arabia - and other leading Salafi factions supporting the insurgency to steer "vetted, or moderate Salafi" rebels away from the Al Qaeda aligned groups; particularly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), who are now portrayed as simply "foreign jihadists" and have become the leading fall-guy in Western and Gulf media for every atrocity committed by the rebels. This false perception has been built as a result of a Western and Gulf initiated public relations campaign to "moderate" the image of the Salafi/Jihadi fundamentalists (as well as those more inclined to basic criminality, killing, and destruction) who may be more willing to meet the requirements of their Gulf donors and the United States. Yet, contrary to this divisive narrative, the same "moderate" Salafi's who are now supposedly being encouraged to disassociate from their Al Qaeda affiliates have happily fought alongside - more often than not as a junior partner - the West's supposed "number one enemy" (AQ) since the insurgency began in 2011.




In further contrast to the aforementioned "Awakening" narrative, Jabhat al-Nusra (JaN) - the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda ideologues - are still very much in the mix. Although various pundits and analysts have made efforts to publicise tensions between ISIS and JaN, the two groups still share a similar Jihadist ideology and cooperate in key areas, particularly on paramilitary operations; as do the hardline Salafi groups such as Ahrar Al-Sham, who in turn fully cooperate with the western friendly "moderates" forming the backbone of Jaish al-Islam. In the recent ISIS takeover of the "FSA" held town of Azaz from the western-friendly Northern Storm brigade (of John McCain fame), Liwa al-Tahwid quickly offered to broker a ceasefire and acted as interlocutor between the two warring factions. ISIS in turn, rejected any "FSA" authority and have since taken control of the town - not that Liwa al-Tahwid could have stopped them anyway.




These events directly contradict the notion that the new "Army of Islam" is in any rush to disassociate, let alone be able to wage war upon the ISIS or its extremist affiliates. Moreover, the leader of Jaish al-Islam, Zahran Alloush, publicly disowned his own "captain" after he warned ISIS there would be open conflict if they "continued this chaos". The leader claimed that the comments were "dangerous" and designed to "cause strife between muslims".




Furthermore, in a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Alloush, free of his "moderate" chains, lets loose on his ideals for a future Syria, in which he aspires to resurrect the Umayyad Empire (2nd Islamic Caliphate with Syria at its core and Damascus as its capital), and "cleanse" Damascus of "Majous" (pejorative Arabic term for Iranians) "Rafideh" (Shi'ites) and "Nusayris" (Alawites).




Rebel leaders openly espousing sectarian rhetoric has been a running theme throughout the conflict; in line with this trend, Alloush's statement can be taken as a clear indication that his new "Jaish al-Islam" is not in the least bit concerned with abiding by a western-friendly moderate image. Alloush, like the majority of rebel leaders, is a fundamentalist Salafist, who looks on at the minorities of Syria as kafir (unbelievers) who must submit to his interpretation of Salafi Islam or be killed.




The western/Gulf media narrative surrounding this new "Islamist Alliance" is a re-hash of failed PR campaigns of the past, which attempted to mitigate the inherent fundamentalist ideologies of the insurgents waging war upon the Syrian state. In stark contrast to the Caliphate-inspired visions held by the majority of rebel leaders, Syria has been a pluralistic secular society for decades, the majority of its Sunni muslim population are conservative and have coexisted peacefully alongside the many other religions and ethnic minorities that make up Syria's diverse society, history, and culture. The people of Syria do not aspire to a Saudi sponsored Salafi/Wahhabi leadership or doctrine of law. Contrary to the popular narrative emerging in western and Gulf media that this new force will represent an indigenous "moderate Islamist" coalition capable of taking on the foreign elements and Al Qaeda, the majority of Syrians will be repelled by the sectarian language and ideologies of Zohran Alloush; his groups overt affiliations and pandering to Al Qaeda ideologues; and his "Army of Islam".




Considering the above context, the narrative of home-grown Salafis somehow being more amenable to the Syrian population than their ISIS/JaN fundamentalist colleagues becomes even less tenable. Alloush's formation of Jaish al-Islam, alongside the "Islamist Alliance" denunciation of the western-backed political opposition, show a marked shift of the insurgency further toward the Al Qaeda ideologues fighting the Syrian regime, not further away from them.
